Cards Term Balance Definition A sense that all the elements in a picture are arranged in a satisfying way--a sense of stability in composition Term Shape Definition A two-dimensional area that is defined in some way. All shapes are either geometric or free-form. Term What are two ways shapes can be defined? Definition Positive space (itself) or negative space (the space around it) Term Geometric Definition Can be described using mathematical formulas Term Free-form Definition Irregular and uneven shapes Term Forms Definition Objects with three dimensions. Term Color Definition Has three properties: hue, value, and intensity Term Hue Definition Primary colors: red, yellow, blue Term Value Definition Amount of light Term Intensity Definition Brightness or dullness of a hue Term Shade Definition Adding black to change the value of a hue Term Tint Definition Adding white to change the value of a hue Term Texture Definition How things feel, or look like they would feel if you touched them Term Matte Definition Dull Term What kinds of texture are there? Definition Rough, smmoth, (matte, shiny) (parenthases are for surfaces) Term Space Definition The emptiness around, between, above, in, etc. objects Term Value depends on...? Definition How much light a surface reflects Term Informal balance Definition Assymetrical Term Formal balance Definition Symmetrical Term Emphasis Definition The artist makes one part of the work dominent. Can be achieved through stressing difference in light, color, texture, etc. Term Harmony Definition Combining similar parts in an artwork to accent similarity Term Movement Definition Giving the illusion that the picture is changing. Draws your eye to a certain point in the picture. Term Proportion Definition The size of things in the picture depends on thier positions to other things in the picture. Term Rythm Definition Elements in the drawing are repeated to create a pattern. 5 types: random, regular, alternation, flowing, progressive Term Unity Definition All parts of the artwork relate to each other (all are shades of red, all are fish, etc.) Term Variety Definition Differences in the elements of the artwork. Can offset harmony and prevent the picture from being boring.
