Henge- arrangement of stones in a cirlce.

Seems to have been some sort of astronomical observatory. This site was important to those who built it. They did not live beyond 30 years of age.

"Venus of Willendorf" 22,000 - 21,000 BC from Willendorf, Austria. The anatomical exaggeration suggests that it served as a fertility image. The lack of a face makes it seem that the figurine represents the female form and not a specific woman. The head is either covered by a mass of curly hair or a woven hat.

Hall of the Bulls Cave Paintings- Lascaux, France 13,000 BC

All the animals are in profile, showing four legs and the side of the head. Here we see two of the basic approaches to art in that some animals are colored where others are merely in outline form.

Rhinoceros, wounded man, and disemboweled bison- 13,000 BC at Lascaux, France.

This constitutes the earliest example of narrative art ever discovered. Thought to be used as a teaching tool for the younger members of the group.

Made of two or more large upright stones that are capped off by a horizontal stone. Thought to be tombs.

Passage Grave 3,000-2,500 BC

Megalithic- architecture using great stones (megaliths). It is a tomb with a long stone corridor leading to a burial chamber, all covered by a great earthen burial mound.

Nanna Ziggurat- Ur, Iraq 2100-2050 BC

Multi-platform temple structure. Dedicated to Nanna, the moon god. Was also the home of Abraham.

Would be put in the temple to hold a person's position in case the gods appeared.

Head of Akkadian Ruler (Naram-Sin?) 2300-2200 BC

Was probably used in warfare. Ritual mutilation- the eyes, ears, and nose were damaged, thereby destroying the senses.

Victory Stele of Naram-Sin, 2254-2218 BC Commemorated his conquest of the Lullubi. He is depicted wearing horns, which is a symbol of divine power and authority.
