St. Etienne

-prototype of the great gothic cathedrals of the 12th and 13th centuries b/c of the twin towers.

-tremendously top heavy

-tri-partite harmonic facade. (you can cut it up into sections of 3 both horizontally and vertically. Three? Why? to represent the godhead.

-HEADLINER: Two-ribed vaulting. Another major characteristic of Gothic.

-those ribs transfer the weight down which allows the wall space to be opened up. They fill in all that space with stained glass windows.

-This was built by William Duke of Normandy 1064 who in 1066 conquered all of England. He then became William I, the first french king of England.

Abbey Church of St. Denis

-HEADLINER: Gothic is the brainchild of a single genius: Aba Sugar. Sugar was a man of small stature and small family, who in all of his smallness refused to be a small man.

-HEADLINER: the two main characteristics are height and light. the pillars get higher and higher to sweep the viewer’s eyes upwards to heaven.

-HEADLINER: Gothic is the only form of architecture in western civilization that builds with light.

-HEADLINER: The two major goals of gothic Design are first Height(how can we get them look upwards, closer to god) and second Light.

-Natural light used as a symbol for spiritual light.

Notre Dame Cathedral

-no more heavy, squatty, towers. the tall tower is called a flesh tower. “arrow”

-The first flying buttresses were here.

-one of the three portals is different than the other two. Why? everything else is balanced perfectly. they did it because it is a huge architecture reminder that as long as there are people in this world we are dealing with imperfect people and imperfect circumstances.

-HEADLINER: 4-part elevation is always early gothic.

-HEADLINER: notre Dame is the transition of early gothic to high gothic.

-"a saint is someone who lets the light shine through”

Cartres Cathedral

-have the oldest surviving buttresses. they’re very heavy and massive. this works against because it will block light

-HEADLINER:Chartres is an example of gothic architecture because it exhibits the major characteristic of gothic design (early, high, rayonnot, flamboyant.)

-it was completed in 26 years using medieval technology. The building is twice the size of the salt lake temple.

-HEADLINER: Chartres has the most famous stained glass in all the world.

-HEADLINER it’s the jewel of a grown of gothic architecture.

-one of the very few survivng examples of gothic architecture where the color remains

Salisbury Cathedral

-HEADLINER: screen facade, where the facade extends further than the building.

-it took over 30 mosaic(ers) over 250 years to complete this. and when the light hits it it is incredible.

-the twin towers are not the massive ones that we see in france.

-polychrome= multicolored. this is a polychrome building
