Definition
Returned from North America with Natives spoke or Roanoke. He sent his cousin Sir Richard Grenville to go to the Island. After the settlers were rescued, he tried to colonize again.

Definition
He is an Oxford clergyman and an English propagandist for colonization. He argued colonies would create new markets for English goods and alleviate poverty and unemployment by syphoning off the surpluss population. New work sprung up from prosperities the colonies created. As a result, colonial commerce allows England to get products from its own territories.

Puritans who left Plymouth on the English coast on the Mayflower Compact. They knew they were pilgrims as said by William Bradford, their leader.

Definition
He was a controversial minister from Salem. Also a confirmed seperatist who said that Massachussets church should abandon allegance to the Church of England. Called for complete seperation of church and state. The colonial government banished him. Later on, he came to create the town of Providence.

Definition
In early 1867, the radicals passed 3 reconstructon bills and even though Johnson vetoed them, congress overode his decision. These bills finally established a coherent plan for reconstruction.

Definition
He fought in the wars for Dutch independence from Spain. He was captured in Transylvania and forced into slavery. In 1604 he joined the London Company. His voyages accelerated the porcesses that destroyed the Powhatan society, disrupted the American Indian World and established the primacy of English Culture in the region.

Founded in the Spring of 1607. The colony needed soldiers, craftsmen, and farmers. Energy wasted in the search for gold and silver. More than one-third of the colonists died in the winter of 1607-08 for Malaria, Typhoid Fever, and Dysentery.

A member of parliament and a military hero. He led a group of unpaid trustees who founded Georgia. His vision was to erect a military barrier against the Spanish lands on the southern border of English America, and they wanted to provide a refuge for the impoverished. He led the first colonial expedition to Georgia.

Being the daughter of Great Chief Powhatah, Pocahontas was kidnapped by the English. Because he wouldnt ransom her, she married John Rolfe. Also, she converted to Christianity and went to England with her husband.

Created by a group of Puritan Merchants. This company is a new enterprise that was created to take advantage of opportunities in America. To begin, their interest was mainly economic. This allowed them to establish a colony in the New World.

Definition
John Winthrop was appointed as the governor of the Massachusetts Bay Company. He organized the migration to England. Lead the expedition for New England in 1630. There were 17 ships and 1000 people. His expedition was the largest migration in the 17th century.

Tobacco
Definition
Was in wide use in Europe by the Spanish colonies, in the 17th century. The "poisonous weed" caused death. James the first led attack with a counterblast to tobacco (1604) urging his people not to imitate the barbarious indians. 1612, John Rolfe experimented with a strain of tobacco that Indians grew. There was a need of large land for tobacco growth.

Definition
A type of society where there was a fine line between church and state. The governement would protect the ministers. Also, the taxes that people paid, would go to support the church. Colonial Massachusetts was a theocratic society.

Definition
A constitution adopted by Windsor and Wethersfield. They adopted the constitution when they established a colonial government of Connetticut. This created a government similar to the one of Massachusetts Bay.
