Definition

Causes:

Perry attacked British troops on great lakes.

Washington was burned by British troops.

Effects

Increased sense of Nationalism.

Sectionalism decreased and factions diminished.

Diplomatic Respect was gained by foriegn nations.

Congress was now consumed by War Hawks.

Jefferson V. Adams

The first election with two political parties.

  Adams won as a member of the federalist party.

The votes were primarily issued by regions.

Jefferson became Adam's Vice President.

Aaron Burr became the Vice President. 

 This was decided by the house because of a tie.

Peaceful transfer of power.

Demographic strength in South and West.

Washington's Farewell Address
Definition

Cause

Washington's reputation and image was being hurt by the two political parties.

 

Features

Published in newspapers and was not really given.

Warned against foreign alliances that were permanent.

 

Effects

Set a precedent for two term president.

Helped promote no permanent foreign alliances.

Helped to promote isolisationism and to look West not East.

Jefferson's Inconsistancy

 

Definition

Causes

Jefferson felt obligated and forced into ideals because he was in a mainly federalist goverment.

 

Features

Jefferson promoted many events that were not faithful to his normal Republican ideas.

Embargo-used strong powers of fedeal Government.

Lousianna Purchase-used powers not granted in Constitution although he has very strict ideas for it.

He also kept the National Bank when he though strongly against it.

 

Effects

Jefferson showed two different sides and realized that things can not be either completely Republian or completely Federalist.

The Federalist Papers
Definition

Causes

Wanted to promote ratification of the Constitution rather than the old Articles of Confederation.

 

Features

Written by Alexander Hamilton, John Jay and Madison.

Published in newspapers widespread.

In Federalist #10 it was writen that no factions could occur in such a large republic.

 

Effects

Helped to ratify the constitution within states that did not want it ratified, such as New York.

Term

Alien and Sedition Acts

 

Definition

Causes

Immigrants that became republicans stated flowing into the United States and started to critisize the Federalists and vote against them.

 

Features 

The residency changed from 5 to 14 years.

Presidents could deport Aliens without due process.

The sedition act made it illegal for anyone to criticize the president or his party.

This was written to expire in one year.

 

Effects

Jefferson and Madison wrote the Virgina and Kentucky Resolutions to assert the right of states to nullify or declare laws unjust.

Eventually Jefferson pardoned the Alien and Sedition act Martyrs.

Hamilton's Financial Plan
Definition

Causes

The extra debt and bad credit was built up from the Revolution and must thus be paid.

 

Feautures

The National Bank was made to increase credit.

Assumption of States debts which made them closer to the federal goverment.

Tariffs were created for revenue.

Excise tax was placed on Whiskey.

Wealthy were meant to be head of this financial system and Virginia was given the captiol to help promote it.

 

Effects

 

The wealthy seemed to control the goverment.

The Whiskey rebellion occured.

Credit and finance was improved.

Whiskey Rebellion
Definition

Causes

Hamilton's new financial plan placed a whiskey tax.

These backcountry men did not have access to the Mississippi River.

 

Features

Rebel farmers began to attack and ravage tax collectors and villages.

 

Effects

Washington and Hamilton decided that a military effort was needed. They issued and army of 13000 troops that took on these rebel farmers. This helped to show that the National Goverment was very strong and that their force can and will be used.

XYZ Affair
Definition

Causes

Adams sent diplomats to France to develop peace. 

 

Features

 Three men demanded $250,000 to be given to the French and Adams accepted it.

Republicans were embarrased by this and the public thought it was madness.

 

Effects

Issued the undeclared Naval war against France.

Led to the Alien and Sedition acts as French were settling in the US and americans were speaking against the goverment.

Hartford Convention
Definition

Causes

The Embargo hurt the people of New England as well as the war fought closely to them.

 

Features

New Englanders joined together in Hartford to make a list of demands to Jefferson and even talk about succession.

They wanted and end to the 3/5th compromise, compensation for their loss during the embargo and a 2/3 vote to declare war, embargos and to add new states.

All these things hurt the North either economically or by their representation in government.

This also resulted in the end of the Federalists party as they were even seen as traitors.
