During the Critical Period what kind of government was in place?
Definition
The constitutional congress was the representation for the the thirteen sovereign states. Each state was called upon to draft it's own Constitution. These Constitutions normally included a bill of rights and required annual elections for representatives.

How was America doing economically during the Critical Period?
Definition
America was suffering from a depression. There were many debts from the American Revolution. There were also no national currency.

Definition
They seized land from Loyalist, cut it up and then sold it. Economic democracy came before political democracy

What was Britain doing to disrupt America during the Critical Period?
Definition
They continued to impose the navigation laws. They encouraged Native Americans to attack settlements. They were angry that America did not give property back to loyalist.

What was Spain doing to disrupt America during the Critical Period?
Definition
They closed down the mouth of the Mississippi in 1784. The most affected were settlers in Kentucky and Tennessee who relied on that port. They also encouraged Native Americans to attack settlers.

Definition
It ensured trade with Spain for the North East which angered southerns who were dependent on the goods. The North easterners did not want the southerners to succeed because it meant less dense a population and a shrinking real-estate market.

Definition
Ratified in 1781
It took a long time to ratify because NY and VA had huge amounts of land that extended westward. However, there were many states that complained they would not have acquired so much land had it not been for their assistance in the war. Eventually NY and VA gave up the land and Congress promised they would make new states out of it.
