  1. Relaxes & dilates veins & arteries, increasing blood flow & decreasing BP. Vasodilation causes blood to pool in veins, decreasing the amt of blood the heart has to pump (preload) & the resistance that the heart has to pump against (afterload).

*Sublingual-Fast acting Tx

*NTG Spray (Nitrolingual)- put under tongue (dont inhale)

*NTG PO (Nitrogard, Nitrocot)- Not for emergency uses, take @ scheduled times to prevent angina in chronic pt- taper gradually.

*NTG IV (Nitrobid-IV, Tridil)

Teaching (5):

Definition
  1. Make sure mouth is moist, not swallow.
  2. Keep bottle out of light (dont change bottle)
  3. Expiration date (6 months)
  4. Take cotton out of bottle
  5. Dont keep bottle nxt to pt or in glove compartment.
  6. 3x5 Rule
  7. Assess whats going on, have pt sit & rest
  8. Call telemetry & Obtain EKG
  9. Assess pain, VS pre & post
