What: craftsmen, laborers, and sailors

When: Formed in 1765

Where: New York

Why: Opposition to The Stamp Act. Not peaceful, angry protesters. "liberty" parades almost every night in late 1765. Took the lead in enforcing the boycott of British imports. The angry mob-style tactics worked and the British backed off, repealing The Stamp Act by 1766--replaced with The Declatory Act, which wasn't much better.

Why: Affirmed allegiance to Britain, but insisted in the right to consent to taxation. Parliament inadvertently united America.
