Term
What is an Algebraic Expression
Definition

An expression consisting of one or more numbers or variables along with one or more arithmetic operations

Ex:   5a +2

  3x

xy

(3/2)x2

Term
What is the definition of the word "Sum" ?
Definition
This is the answer to an addition problem
Term
What is the definition of the word  "Difference" ?
Definition
This is the answer to a subtraction problem
Term
What is the definition to the word "Product" ?
Definition
This is the answer to a multiplication problem
Term
What is the definition of word "Quotient"?
Definition
This is the answer to a division problem.
Term
What is a "verbal expression" ?
Definition
This is an Algebraic Expression written in words.
Term
What is the Order of Operations?
Definition

The rule that lets you know which operation to preform first.  Can be remember by using the acronym: P.E.M.D.A.S

P=Parenthesis

E=Exponent

M=Multiplication

D=Division

A=Addition

S=Subtraction

Term
What is the "Distributive Property" ?
Definition

This is the property that states:  Anything on the outside of a parenthesis is multiplied to everything on the inside of the parenthesis:

Ex:  3(2a-4) = 6a-12

         (x+8y)2=2x+16y

Term
What is the horizontal axis of a coordinate system called?
Definition
This is the x-axis
Term
What is the vertical axis of the coordinate system called?
Definition
This is the y-axis.
Term
What is an ordered pair?
Definition

The ordered pair is the location of a point on a coordinate system.  It uses the x coordinate and the y coordinate enclosed in parenthesis.

Rememberx is always before y, just like the alphabet.

Term
What is the origin on a coordinate system?
Definition
The origin is the point where both the x-axis and y-axis intersect.  This location's ordered pair is (0,0)
Term
What is the Domain ?
Definition

The domain is a set of all the x coordinates of a relation, a mapping, or a graph.

Term
What are the rules for the Domain?
Definition

1.   No repeats allows.

2.   Order the numbers from least to greatest.

Term
What is the Range ?
Definition
The range is the set of all the y coordinates of a relation, a mapping or a graph.
Term
What are the rules for a Domain?
Definition

1.   No repeats allows.

2.   Order the numbers from least to greatest.

Term
What is a Function?
Definition

A function is a relationship between input and output where there is exactly one output for each input.

FYI:  The x coordinates do not repeat in a function.

Term
To see if a graph is a function, you do this?
Definition
The Vertical Line Test.  Run a vertical pencil, pen, or ruler from left to right on a graph.  If it does not touch the graph (or points) more that once the graph is a function.
Term
What are the steps to solving most equations?
Definition

1.  Where is my variable?  ex:  left, right, both, middle

2.  What is attached to my variable?

3.  What is it doing to my variable?

4.  Undo it.

Term
If you have a fraction attached to a variable in an equation, how do you undo it?
Definition
Find the reciprocal of the fraction and multiply it to the other side of the equation.
Term
How do you know an equation is linear?
Definition
The exponents are equal to one.  Any other number makes the equation non-linear
Term
What is the equation for the Slope.
Definition

         y2-y1

m =  --------

         x2-x1

Term
What is the definition of the Slope?
Definition
The slope is the steepness of a line.  This refers to the ration of the rise over the run.
Term
What is the expression for Standard Form?
Definition

The expression is:  Ax+By=C

Term
What are the steps for getting an expression in Standard Form?
Definition

1.  A and B are on the same side.

2.  C is by itself.

3.  A is always first.

4.  A is always positive

5.  There are no fractions allowed.

FYI : you do not have to have an A or a B, but you have to have at least one of these.

Term
What is the equation for Slope-Intercept form?
Definition

y = mx + b

Where y is just y, m is the slope, x is just x and b is the y-intercept.

Term
What does m represent?
Definition
m = slope
Term
What does b represent?
Definition
b is the y-intercept
Term
What is the equation for Point-Slope form?
Definition
y - y1 = m (x - x1)
Term
How do you know if two linear equations are parallel?
Definition

For these to be parallel, m1 = m2 and

b1 not equal to b2

Term
How do you know if two linear equations are Perpendicular?
Definition

Two linear equations are perpendicular is their slopes are opposite reciprocals of each other.

In other words:  m1(m2) = -1

Term
What is the only rule for Inequalities?
Definition
If you multiply or divide an inequality by a negative number, you must remember to flip the inequality.
