Dr. Traore interpreted the different characters as such: the digging stick is a phallic symbol and the animals that are lifted out are children while the hunter is a mentor. The buffaloes that the lion offers to the orphan are symbols for protein while the gold is a symbol for wisdom. The serpent kills the orphan eventually because the wisdom he has gained has served its purpose and he isn’t needed anymore. This shows that every child is useful and valuable on his or her own and provide a unique gift that none other can.
