Definition

Greek Hero of Trojan War

Main character of Homer's Iliad

Demigod - mother was Thetis, a nymph and father was Peleus, a king

Seer said that Troy could not be taken without his help. Father knew he would die young, so he tried to hide him.

Agamemnon took away Briseis, his war prize, so Achilles refused to fight for the Greeks.

Patroclus, his friend, fought in his place and was killed by Hector.

Slayed Hector outside gates of Troy

Killed by Paris, who shot him in the heel. Whole body invulnerable except for heel- so, weakness=Achilles Heel

Mother tried to make him immortal by dipping him in the River Styx, but held him by the heel, so it remained vulnerable
