Cards

Term
achondroplasia
Definition
A disorder of bone growth that causes the most common type of dwarfism
Term
Bone Marrow Transplant
Definition
a procedure to replace damaged or destroyed bone marrow with healthy bone marrow stem cells.
Term
Bone mineral density test (BMD)
Definition
measures the density of minerals (such as calcium) in your bones using a special X-ray or computed tomography (CT) scan. This information is used to estimate the strength of your bones.
Term
Bone Scan
Definition
is a nuclear scanning test to find certain abnormalities in bone that are triggering the bone's attempts to heal.
Term
Closed Reduction
Definition
The correction of a bone fracture by manipulation without an incision into the skin.
Term
Dual energy xray absorptiometry (DEXA)
Definition
A procedure that uses a very small amount of radiation to measure changes in the bone density; as small as 1 %
Term
Open Reduction
Definition
The correction of a bone fraction by making an incision into the skin and rejoining the fractured bone parts often by mechanical means.
Term
Orthopedics
Definition
Doctors that deal with the deformities of bones or muscles.
Term
osteogenesis imperfecta (OI)
Definition
An inherited (genetic) disorder characterized by extreme fragility of bones; also known as brittle bone disease
Term
Osteomyelitis
Definition
Acute or chronic bone infection
Term
osteopetrosis
Definition
A rare hereditary bone disorder in which bones become overly dense
Term
Osteosarcoma
Definition
A type of cancer that starts in the bones
Term
Paget's disease
Definition
A chronic disorder that can result in enlarged and misshapen bones due to abnormal bone destruction and regrowth
Term
Traction
Definition
set of mechanisms for straightening broken bones or relieving pressure on the spine and skeletal system
Term
Projection Bone Markings
Definition
(aka processes) that grow out from the bone
Term
Depressions Bone Marking
Definition
(cavities) that indent the bone
Term
Head Joint Projection
Definition
bony expansion on a narrow neck
Term
Facet Joint Projection
Definition
smooth, nearly flat articular surface
Term
What are the 5 basic functions of the skeletal system?
Definition
1- support 2-protection 3- blood cell production 4- movement 5-mineral storage
Term
Support
Definition
The skeleton provides the framework for the body. Bones provide the basic shape and structure for the body. What do you think we would look like if we didn't have bones? Pretty silly right?
Term
Protection
Definition
The skeleton protects organs in the body. Bones can cover and protect many of out major organs. They are like an armor that protects our insides.
Term
Blood Cell Production
Definition
Inside of the long bones in our bodies, there is a cavity that is filled with a substance called Bone Marrow. In this tissue, new blood cells are produced, and damaged blood cells are repaired. Red bone marrow produces red blood cells, white blood cells and other blood elements.
Term
Movement
Definition
The bones are the levers that help the body move in different directions and in different ways. The bones by themselves can't move without the muscles that are connected to them.
Term
Mineral Storage
Definition
Mineral is a substance that the body needs to carry out all of our bodily functions like thinking, breathing and moving around.
Term
What is one thing that the bones need to become strong?
Definition
Calcium
