Term

differential weathering

Definition

The process where softer rocks are worn away leaving harder rocks behind.

Term

climate

Definition

The average weather conditions of an area over a long period of time.

Term

climate factors

that affect weathering

Definition

  • temperature
  • moisture

Term

Other factors

that affect weathering

Definition

  • elevation
  • slope
  • biological factors

Term

 to burrow (verb)

Definition

To dig in order to create a

tunnel or cave

in which to hide or nest

Term

How do

biological factors

affect weathering?

Definition

Organisms in the soil produce acids that can speed up weathering of surrounding rocks

Term

How does slope affect weathering?

Definition
The steep sides of mountains or hills increase the speed of water or other rocks running downhill.    Water that flows rapidly has more energy to break down rock.
Term

How does elevation affect weathering?

Definition

Rocks at high elevations are exposed to high winds and temperature extremes and maybe higher precipitation all of which weather rock more rapidly.
