How does Metformin produce lactic acidosis?

Metformin increases glycolysis & inhibits gluconeogenesis, this combination increases lactic acid & inhibits the path for its metabolism (i.e. gluconeogenesis). All the contraindications are conditions that may precipitate the lactic acidosis (liver failure, CHF, alcoholism, sepsis)
