Term
Pericardium encloses...
Definition
-Heart
-Roots of great vessels:
a. Superior Vena Cava (SVC)
b. Aorta
c. Pulmonary Trunk
Term

-Azygos venous system tributaries [VAST- switch V/A]
Term
Pericardium innervation
Definition

-Phrenic N. -Vagus N. (via cardiac plexus)- aka CN X -Sympathetic trunks [remember, parasympathetic system has long preganglionic axons, while the sympathetic preganglionic chain is pre and para-vertebral- right near/on the heart]

PhENIs and VAGinaS

Term
Pericardium layers
Definition
-Fibrous pericondrium, fused with the:
-Parietal layer of the serous pericardium
-Pericardial cavity (with serous/pericardial fluid)
-Visceral layer of serous pericardium (aka epicardium)
Term
Pericarditis
Definition
-Inflammation of pericardium due to infection
-Causes chest pain
-"Pericardial friction rub"- sounds like rustle of silk
Term
Pericardial effusion
Definition
-Due to pericarditis
-Excess fluid/pus build up from percardial capillaries into pericardial cavity
-May lead to Cardiac Tamponade
Term
Cardiac Tamponade
Definition
Due to pericardial effusion due to pericarditis
-Build up of fluid compresses heart
-Heart cannot expand fully

Symptoms: Beck's Triad
1. Hypotension (increased heart compression-->decreased stroke volume-->decreased cardiac output)
2. Jugular-vein distension (build up of fluid)
3. Muffled heart sounds (uh, theres fluid in the way..duh)
Term
Pericardiocentesis
Definition
Withdraw fluid from pericardial sac
-Location: LEFT middle of 5th or 6th intercostal space near sternum (aka infrasternal angle)
Term
Atria of heart separated by the
Definition
Interatrial septum
Term
