Plantation colonies grew cash crops like sugarcane, tobacco, and rice using slave labor. They were located in the Caribbean, southern N. America and in S. America because of the warm climate that was good for these crops

Definition
Spain ruled its colonies closely, sending viceroys to rule as representatives for the monarchy. The encomienda system gave colonial landowners the right to use the labor of the natives who lived on that land.

•Charter-written agreement (promising the same rights & freedoms citizens in England had)
•Representative assembly—group of elected officials who speak for the people
•This allowed the British much more say in running their colonies. They were self-governing.

The Atlantic slave trade began in 1441, with a Portuguese ship unloading the first slaves in Lisbon.

What was the Middle Passage? What was it like for the slaves on board?
Definition
Triangular Trade was the exchange of manufactured goods from Europe to Africa, Africans from Africa to the Americas, and raw materials such as sugar, tobacco, and cotton from the Americas to Europe. The Middle Passage was one side of the triangle from Africa to the Americas when enslaved Africans were transported. It was a long, brutal, voyage. Africans sickened, starved, suffocated below the decks of slave ships.
