Swamp #2
Definition
This is another picture of a swamp. There is a lot of organic matter in the soil underneath the water. This could lead to the production of coal over millions of years.
Term
Definition
This swamp contains large amounts of organic matter that does not decompose due to a lack of oxygen in the water. This will be the future site of peat formation. After compaction, lignite will form. If further compaction occurs, bituminous coal is formed. If metamorphic pressures are present, antracitic coal could form.

This shows a rock with calcium carbonate accumulations on the underside. As water percolates from above, calcium carbonate is left behind much like the formation of stalactites in a cave.
