Cards

Term
Physical Topology
Definition

Physical layout of the network. Shows physical relation between all devices.

-Cables runs

-Net device locations

Term
Logical Topology
Definition

Documents the protocols and applications that control the flow of the network.

-IP Addresses

-FQDN

-Protocols

Term
Critical Hardware and Software Inventory
Definition
Provides documentation on what devices/soft/firmware you have, incase you need to rebuild
Term
Network Policy
Definition
Formalized statement or set of statements that defines network functioning and establishes expectations for users, management, and IT staff personnel.
Term
Disaster Recovery
Definition
Administrative function of protecting people and resources and data.
Term
Three Disaster Categories
Definition

Natural Disasters - Fire, Storms, Lightning, etc.

Data Destruction - Mass loss of data

Equipment Failure - Hardware failure

Term
Disaster Recovery Plan
Definition

Includes:

-Complete list of responsible individuals.

-Critical hardware and software inventory.

-Detailed instructions on hwo to rebuild the network.

Term
Hot Site
Definition
Fully configured alternate network. Can be online whenever needed.
Term
Cold Site
Definition
Predetermined alternate location where a network can be rebuilt after a disaster.
Term
Warm Site
Definition
Business site that performs noncritical functions under normal conditions but which can be rapidly converted to a key operations site if needed.
Term
Fault Tolerance
Definition
Ability of a network to withstand a foreseeable component failure and continue to provide an acceptable level of service.
Term
RAID 0
Definition

Disk Striping.

Spreading data accross multiple drives. Used solely for speed. If one drive fails, the whole system crashes.

Requires at least two disks.

Term
RAID 1
Definition

Disk Mirroring/Duplexing

Takes data from an entire partition and copies it over to a secondary drive. If one hard drive fails, data is still intact.

Requires at least two drives.

Term
Raid 5
Definition

Striping with Parity.

Spreads data byte by byte across multiple drives, with parity information also spread out.

Requires at least three disks.

Term
Link Redundancy
Definition
Network fault-tolerance method that provides alternative network connections that can function if a primary connection is interrupted.
Term
Incremental Backup
Definition
Backs up files that were created or modified since the last full or incremental backup.
Term
DDS/DAT
Definition

Storage Capacity: 1GB to 70GB

Size - 4mm, about the size of an audio tape

Use: Used by many different sized networks

Term
DLT
Definition

Storage Capacity: 15 GB to 600GB+

Size: 1/2-inch cartridges.

Use: The de-facto standard. Used mainly by mid-sized to large sized networks.

Term
Differential Backup
Definition
Backup that backs up files that were created or modified since the last full backup.
