Term
Isolationism
Definition
Definition: The foreign policy in which a country excludes itself from outer bodies and conflicts.
Significance: Great Britain had begun as an isolated nation due to it's status as an island nation.
Term
Battle of the Somme
Definition
The biggest battle of the war. Approximately 1.5 million people perished. The original purpose of the battle was to relieve the soldiers in the Battle of Verdun from German attack. To an extent, it worked.
Historical Conflict:
Was Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig a genius or a murderer?
Orthodox View: He eventually won the war and the Battle of the Somme was simply a manner in which the Allies arrived at that victory.
Revisionist View: Haig purposefully sent thousands of men to their death for his own benefit.
Term
Battle of Verdun
Definition
The first significant battle of the war.
Significance: French determination & belief.
Term
Battle of Passchendaele
Definition
Another major-offensive plan by Haig. The Passchendaele area was extremely swampy, and therefore there was a large number of casualties. Again, there is historical controversy as to whether Haig was a hero or a murderer.
