Women's Social Political Union (1903)
Definition
Founded by Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters, Christabel and Sylvia. The union enrolled mostly middle and upper class women. It emhasized the value of the media and used political stunts such as pelting government officias with eggs, chaining themselves to lampposts, and smashing windows in department stores in order to draw attention to its demands. They were labeled sufferagettes by male politicians.

Definition
Attended medical school at the University of Rome and was the first Italian woman to recieve a medical degree. She characterized "The New Woman" as one who followed a rational scientific perspective. She established a new system of teaching which developed children more fully and set free their personalities by using natural and spontaneous activities in which students learned at their own rate.

"First feminist", Mary gained much respect through her essay called A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. Where she attempted to encourage woman to gain strength in mind and body, and that softness was merely weakness.

Definition
Gained power in Russia to become Catherine II. She was characterised by her modernism and dominance. Many historians have critisized and attacked Catherine after her death for her supposid love affairs and downplay many of her achievements.

Definition
When Napoleon stopped the import of English textiles while the French textile industry was suffering, the Valenciennes lace industry was revived. To stimulate the economy he then forbid women to wear the same dress to court twice, making them buy more fabric.

Marie Antoinette 1774-1793


Definition
Queen of France from 1774-1793, Marie Antoinette is popularly remembered for her famous quote, "Let them eat cake." She supported the monarchy and fought against reform during the French Revolution. She was finally executed using the guillotine in 1793.

Definition
With its invention in 1876, jobs for women finally become available. Due to the progress in machinery during the Industrial Revolution women lost their jobs in manufacturing so the Telephone Exchange became a place that provided many women with jobs during the Second Industrial Revolution.

Thousands of women storm the palace of Versailles demanding bread. Carrying broomsticks, lances, pitchorks, swords and pistols the women begged for bread for their children who were starving. On October 6th, Louis XVI conceded.
