During the winter, the winds blow north to south.

During the summer, the winds reverse.

 Arose because not everyone was willing to settle for a life divided between ordinary activity and ascetic withdrawal.

They wished to escape the unsatisfactory conditions of life.

Budda's rules only applied to religious devotees (monks).

Buddhists in India were honored for holiness or feared for their magical powers, but still was treated like any other caste.

"Budda" = Enlightened One
