Definition

French and Indian War
Definition
1756-1763- Part of the Seven Years’ War in Europe. Britain and France fought for control of the Ohio Valley and Canada. The Algonquins, who feared British expansion into the Ohio Valley, allied with the French. The Mohawks also fought for the French while the rest of the Iroquois Nation allied with the British. The colonies fought under British commanders. Britain eventually won, and gained control of all of the remaining French possessions in Canada, as well as India. Spain, which had allied with France, ceeded Florida to Britain, but received Louisana in return.

Shays Rebellion
Definition
1786-1787- Due to unfiar taxes in Massachusetts, farm foreclosures, and imprisioned farmers as debtors, Shay and 1200 men attached courts in western Massachusetts. A state militia put down the rebellion. Rebellion proved the articles of confederation were too weak and bolstered a call for revisions (Constitutional Convention, 1787)

Barbary Pirates
Definition
Group of fighters who attacked American ships along the Barbary Coast of northern Africa at in the first few years of the 19th Century. They were members of a handful of African states who at first signed treaties with the United States in which they promised to stop attacking American ships. However, they broke those treaties. The U.S. fought back with force. Both the Navy and the Marines won big victories, including one at Tripoli in 1805.

1846-1848- armed conflict between the United States and Mexico from 1846 to 1848 in the wake of the 1845 U.S. annexation of Texas. Resulted in the Treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo which called for the annexation of the northern portions of Mexico to the United States.

Watts Riot
Definition
The first large race riot since the end of World War II. In 1965, in the Watts secion of Los Angeles, a riot broke out. This was the result of a white police officer striking a black bystander during a protest. This triggers a week of violence and anger revealing the resentment blacks felt toward treatment toward them.

My Lai Massacre
Definition
One of the darkest moments of the Vietnam War, and further fueled the already growing anti-war movement in the United States. On March 16, 1968, U.S. Army troops murdered more than 300 unarmed Vietnamese women, children, and elderly persons. When the facts of the massacre became known, war crime charges were brought against 30 soldiers, and there was a marked increase in both domestic and foreign pressure to end the war.

Iran Hostage Crisis
Definition
444-day period during which the new government of Iran after the Iranian Revolution held hostage 66 diplomats and citizens of the United States. It is believed by many to have caused President Jimmy Carter of the United States to lose his re-election attempt, and punctuated the first fundamentalist Islamic revolution of modern times. It began on November 4, 1979 and lasted until January 20, 1981.
