Recession:

An economic decline like seen in the Great Depression. Economic strife that causes debt, foreclosures, loss of jobs, and causes the currency to lose value. Can be difficult to get out of. Another recession occured after the Civil War.

To change or improve upon a belief, custom, law, or practice. Pertains to the Reform Movement in America where several groups sought to change less desirable parts of America, one such reform being the temperance movement.

Sectionalism:

Loyalty towards your region or area of the country you live in over loyalty to the country as a whole. Ex. Southern States, Northern States, Western States.

Was a major cause of the Civil War due to the tension and dislike growing between the sections.

State's Rights:

Power in the Government reserved to the states. Major cause of the Civil War because of the fact that the Southern states felt that their state's rights were being threatened by republicans, abolitionists, and Abraham Lincoln. It was also a highly disputed topic when the constitution was being created. A delicate balance between State and Federal power was found.

Suffrage:

The right to vote, most often associated with Women's Suffrage. Women's Suffrage was a political reform that's purpose was obtaining equal rights for women, primarily the right to vote.

Tariff:

A tax on imported goods. Often a subject of dispute between the states. At the start of the New Republic, tariffs were very often disputed and argued about. (National Banl) During Andrew Jackson's Presidency, it was a problem again when he passed the "Teriff of Abominations." The third large case of conflict over tariffs was before the Civil War. The North was in favor of tariffs so that more would buy from American suppliers, while the South thought it was unfair and didin't benefit them.

A reform movement during the 1800s that was against alchohol of all kinds. It seeked to ban alchohol and close down bars.

Philisophical movement that was started by Ralph Waldo Emmerson during the Reform Movement. Some of the groups beliefs were: the spiritual world is more important than the physical world, you can find the truth within your-self through feeling and intuition, you don't have to obey laws you find unjust, civil disobediance, reform,

Triangular Trade:

A trade route between the early Colonies, Europe, and the West Indes. On this route, each country shipped valuable items their country was known for to the next country in a triangular pattern. It was primarily a slave trade route, but animals, produce, and Rum were traded as well.

Unalienable Rights:

Rights that are guaranteed to each human being and cannot be taken away. When a country does not protect your unalienable rights, you have every right to revolt. This was a concept coined by Thomas Paine during the American Revolution. Britain was not being the leader or government America needed, so we revolted to protect our rights. Also, Unalienable rights are emphasized in the Constitution and Declaration of Independance to ensure our rights in the future as well.

1607 Jamestown:

Was the first permanent English Settlement. The settlers were the Pilgrims, and they came in  search of religious freedom. The first year almost destroyed the village, but the settlement made it's fortune with the first big Cash Crop in America: Tobacco.

1763 Treaty of Paris:

Was the treaty that ended the "French and Indian War." France ceded Canada and all North American claims east of the Mississippi River to Britain, except for Louisiana. Allowed Britain to gain Superpower status.

Taxation:

When the government levys a tax on everyday things, in order to better provide services to American citizens, with the money earned. Ex. Raising an Army, building roads and public transportation, funding schools, providing aid in disaster-hit areas. Unfair Taxation is when the government does not refer to the citizens being taxed for their feelings on the tax at all. Or, when the Citizens have no say or representation, like in the Colonies at the start of the American Revolution. "No taxation without representation!"
