Term
Anesthesia
Definition
a loss of sensation
Term
Analgesia
Definition
absence of pain
Term
balanced anesthesia
Definition
administration of multiple drugs concurrently in smaller quantities than would be required if each were given alone, to produce sedation, tranquilization, muscle relaxation, analgesia, or a variety of other effects needed for a particular patient. Maximizes benefits, minimizes adverse effects, and gives the anesthetist the ability to produce anesthesia with the degree of CNS depression, muscle relaxation, analgesia, and immoblization appropriate for the patient and procedure
Term
epidural anesthesia
Definition
regional anesthesia produced by injection of a local anesthetic or analgesic into the epidural space surrounding the spinal cord
Term
general anesthesia
Definition
a reversible state of unconsciousness, immobility, muscle relaxation, and loss of sensation throughout the entire body produced by administration of one or more anesthetic agents
Term
hypnosis
Definition
a sleeplike state from which the patient can be aroused with sufficient stimulation
Term
local anesthesia
Definition
a loss of sensation in a small area of the body produced by administration of a local anesthetic agent in proximity to the area of interest
Term
narcosis
Definition
a drug induced sleep from which the patient is not easily aroused and that is most often associated with the administration of narcotics
Term
noxious
Definition
painful or physically harmful
Term
surgical anesthesia
Definition
a specific stage of general anesthesia in which there is a sufficient degree of analgesia and muscle relaxation to allow surgery to be performed without pain or movement
Term
theraputic index
Definition
TI; a ratio of the toxic to the theraputic dose of a drug, used to measure relative safety. A drug with a wide theraputic index (much more of the drug is required to intoxicate a patint than is required to treat it) is relatively safer than a drug with a narrow theraputic index (one for which the toxic and theraputic doses are similar). Most anesthetic agents have a very narrow theraputic index so the consequences of a calculation or adminstration error may be serious
Term
topical anesthesia
Definition
A loss of sensation of a localized area produced by administration of a local anesthetic directly to a body surface or to a surgical or traumatic wound
Term
tranquilization
Definition
a drug-induced state of calm in which the patient is reluctant to move and is aware of but unconcerned about its surroundings
Term
sedation
Definition
drug-induced CNS depression and drowsiness that vary in intensity from light to deep
