Term
Why would we want to do vaginal cystology?
Definition
It is helpful in determining the optimal stage of estrous for mating or artificial insemination.
Term
What are the basic steps for obtaining your cystological sample?
Definition
1-animal restrained, tail up 2-vulva cleaned and rinsed 3- speculum inserted just cranial of the urethral orifice 4- sterile swab inserted craniodorsally and rotated against vaginal wall to collect cells 5- swab rolled on 2 to 3 slides 6- air dry 7- stain and examine
Term
Name the stages of the estrous cycle.
Definition
Anestrus, Proestrus, Estrus, Metestrus.
Term
What would you see in Anestrus physically?
Definition
No vulvar swelling, Not interested in or attracting males.
Term
What would we see microscopically in Anestrus?
Definition
Noncornified epithelial cells, neutophils, monocytes, but probably no erythrocytes, Debris minimal, may be bacteria. (Parabasal Intermediate cells dominate)
Term
What would we see physically in Proestrus?
Definition
Vulva is swollen, may be some reddish discharge, attracts males, but nonreceptive.
Term
What would we see microscopically in Proestrus?
Definition
Mixture of cornified and noncornified squamous epithelial cells, few neutrophils, fair amount of erythrocyes. ( Parabasal and intermediate cells dominate, WBC's RBC's "dirty" background from mucus)
Term
What do we see physically in Estrus?
Definition
Swollen vulva,pink\yellow discharge, Accepts males.
Term
What do we see microscopically in Estrus?
Definition
cornified squamous epithelial cells, nucleus may be absent, no neutrophils, majority of erythrocytes. (superficial cells dominate > 90%, clear background, few WBC's)
Term
What do we see phyically in Metestrus?
Definition
decreased vulvar swelling, decreased discharge, no longer attracts of accepts males.
Term
What do we see microscopically in metestrus?
Definition
cornified and noncornified cells, debris, no erythrocytes, may be neutrophils and bacteria. (Superficial and intermediate cells 50|50)
Term
What is another name for metestrus?
Definition
Diestrus.
Term
How long does metestrus last?
Definition
2-3 months
Term
How long does anestrus last?
Definition
4 months
Term
How long does proestrus last?
Definition
4 to 13 days, average 9 days
Term
How long does estrus last?
Definition
4-13 days, average 9 days
Term
What animals do not have an estrus cycle?
Definition
Primates, they have a menstual cycle. (Like we don't know about that)
Term
What are the main differences in feline estrus as opposed to canine?
Definition
No vaginal swelling, no erythrocytes present at any time, may be some pink\white discharge.
Term
What are the steps in the changes in a vaginal sqamous epthielial cell during the estrous cycle?
Definition
1- Parabasal epithelial 2- small intermediate(larger, more cytoplasm), 3-large intermediate( even more fried egg looking) 4- Superficial(nucleus becomes pyknotic) 5- superficial(anuclear- no nucleus)
Term
What is vaginitis?
Definition
Inflammation of vagina or uterus.
