NEW DEAL (1933-1936)

Definition
  • Economic Programs promised by FDR in presidential acceptance speech in 1932 for American People
  • Involved presidential executive orders or laws passed by Congress during FDR's first term
  • Made Democrats the majority, Repub. opposed of it
  • Did not end but was response to the Great Depression, it just eased it and improved economy a little
  • Introduced Social Security and unemployment Insurance and others to support American workers that included min. wages and dif types of insurance
  • Also regulated the Stock Market
  • Alternative to Socialism on left, Nazism on right
  • 1st dealt with all groups that needed help for econ. survival
  • 2nd one was more liberal and controversial, bout labor unions

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1932-1945) 

Definition
  • Most significant president of 20th century, elected 1932 
  • Very popular pres., compared to Lincoln cuz willingness to throw off "dogmas of the quiet past", was re-elected for 3rd term in 1940
  • Served in Navy in WW1, got Polio, lost use of legs, hidden from public
  • Had major impact on WWII, died right b4 victory
  • Married dist cousin Eleanor, had affair with secretary
  • Announced New Deal, hoped to reconcile Democracy, individual liberty, and economic planning
  • Rescued banks by calling "Bank Holiday" which greatly increased govts power over it.
  • In New Deal, introduced social security and unemployment insurance, and others to support the work force with min wages, insurance. Also regulated the Stock Market

Social Security (1935)

Definition
  • Act passed in 1935 which showed conviction of FDR that Govt was responsible to ensure well-being of Americans
  • Created system of unemployment insurance, old age pensions, and aid for the disabled, elderly poor, and families with dependent children
  • Centerpiece of Second New Deal

Public Works Administration (1933)

Definition
  • One section of National Industrial Recovery Act created PWA with $3.3 billion in June 1933
  • Built roads, schools, hospitals, and other public facilities, including New York Citys Triborough Bridge
  • Directed by Secretary of Interior Harold Ickes
  • Main goals were to provide employment, stabilize purchasing power, and help revive the economy
