All persons born in the United States are citizens of the United States. The main idea is that it guaranteed "equal" rights for freedsmen.

Definition
No citizen could be denied the right to vote based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude. Basically stating that African-Americans were allowed to vote.

Definition
House voted for Pres. Johnston to be impeached, but he escaped impeachment in the senate by one vote.

Definition
When white planters had slaves, they didn't need to "hire" any workers so when the slaves were free, they had land but no labor, and the slaves were the labor, but they didn't have any land.

Definition
Planters let African-Americans borrow land for a season for a portion of profits. They charged them lots for housing, food, ect. and they were unable to pay their debt off.

Definition
Similar to Sharecropping, but the tenants decide what to plant and when to work, and paid the landowner a portion of profits.

Landowners made more money by opening stores and selling to tenants and sharecroppers at hugely inflated prices.

Labor was 45% white labors by 1875, much more than previously. Farmers farmed cash crops that made more money.

Definition
1. Poor Whites and Freedmen don't have jobs.
2. Landowners agreed to let them farm the landowners land for a portion of profits.
3. Landowner charges them huge prices for housing and food.
4. sharecropper owes more to the landowner than their share of crop is worth.
5. Sharecropper cannot leave the farm until he pays off the debt.

Definition
Sharecropping and Tenant Farming encouraged planters to grow crops like Cotton, Tobacco, and Sugar Cane. These made more money, but led the South to food shortages.

Wanted to keep blacks as submissive laborers. Scared them out of voting by burning homes, killing people, ect.

Stopped the KKK. Banned the use of terror, violence, ect. to scare people out of voting because of their race.

North had more Railroad, Population, Factories, Money, Technology, prejudice against blacks, and was more urban.
South had more Agriculture, Livestock, and was more rural.

Abolitionist who attacked the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, VA. Brown was sentenced to hanging because of treason.
