LBJ's domestic program w/ two main goals: to eliminate poverty + racial injustice. Great society launchedspending programs addressed education, medical care, urban problems, and transportation. Roughly similar to the New Deal (FDR) but differed greatly in programs enacted. UBER PROGRESSIVE

outlawed major forms of discrimination against blacks and women, including racial segregation. Ended unequal voter requirements, racial segregation at schools/workplace. Congress utilized maximum authority Regulating interstate commerce, equal protection(14th amend)and duty to protect voting rights (15th amendment)

Gave LBJ authorization for use of conventional military force in Southeast Asia in response to viet c ong forces attacking US ships. Created in response to gulf of tonkin incident. Very important because it gave the PREZ authorization to use conventional military force without deceleration of war by congress.

Peoples army of vietnam fought against republic of vietnam (good people/U.S) Purpose was to strike military/civilian command and spark uprising in hopes of demolishing Saigon government. Huge shock to US public. The commys can actually fight better than we fought..duhh

Kent State students rioted against bombing of cambodia which led nervous (they where facing a ton of nutzo college kids) national guards to kill 4 students and wound 9 others. Deaths caused tons of revolts at colleges around US. Caused many schools to shut down and forever affect the horrible war public opinion.

Described people who did not join in on counterculture or anti government demonstrations, consisted of WWII veterans, young midwest/west/south vietnam vets. Quazi conservative.

Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty. Reference to weapon control meetings and two Salt Treaties. Salt 1=Anti-ballistic missile treaty + interim agreement between the two powers. Salt 2=agreement nullified by Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan (US withdrew).  Led to START treaties which put nuclear weapon caps in place.

Republican spies infiltrated democratic facilities to gain important information to allow domination (unfair chances) for debates, reelection, and other crucial democratic information. The 5 men were caught breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters and bank accounts led back to the republican party funds and white house recording systems provided Nixon as the ultimate culprit. He tried to cover the situation up, but it failed and later led to his resignation and huge distrust in the government.

1973 Oil crisis fueled by OPEC (organization of Arab petroleum exporting countries) proclaiming an oil embargo in response to US supplying Israeli Military during the Yom Kippur War. Caused hatred for united States and fueled energy crisis craze.

52 US citizens held hostage for 444 days after Islamic students/militants took over US Embassy in support of the Iranian revolution. Majority of hostages released at end of Ronald Reagan inaugural address. Crisis marked beginning of U.S legal action/economic sanctions against Iran.>>>further weakened ties between Iran and US

Speech given on July 15, 1979 by President Carter to outline lack of public governmental support fueled by jfk/rfk/mlk assassinations, vietnam war, watergate. Speech outlined plea for energy conservation in response to energy market increases. Ill received by public and led people to believe "we were falling apart"

(that's some serious lobbying) Founded by Jerry Falwell, the group played huge role in 1980's election through strong conservative support. Lobbied for prayer/creationism teaching in schools, opposed equal rights amendment/homosexual rights/abortion/Us salt treaties. Dissolved in 1989

Reagan Economics which involved utilization of supply side dynamics (called trickle-down economics by critics). Four pills: Reduce growth of Gov't spending, Reduce Income tax+ Capital gains tax, reduce government regulation, and control money supply to reduce inflation. Economy improved but many claimed it was because it had no where to go but up.

Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (lots of double consonant's) was a trade union (1968-1981) that pushed for better working conditions, better pay, and a 32 hour work week. Following a strike the Reagan Administration destroyed it. Very crucial because President finally exercised right to fire striking government employees. Gave importance to the private sector right to hire/discharge workers.

Scandal in which Reagan administration facilitated arms sales to Iran against US Arms treaties in hopes of releasing hostages. The real reason was never deciphered.

Strategic Defense Initiative. Reagan initiative focused on using ground and space based systems to defend the US from attack by nuclear ballistic missiles. Lead to large amounts of space defense funding and super weapon testing/creation.

Supreme court (1953-1969) headed by Earl Warren as chief justice. Led Liberal majority that used extremely liberal judicial power to triumph over conservative opponents. Expanded civil rights, civil liberties, judicial power, and federal power in dramatic ways. Brought end to racial segregation (bill of rights) and ended prayer in public schools. Highest point of judicial power.

Definition
Conservative Chief Justice of the united states (1986-2005). Favored conception of federalism and emphasized the tenth amendments reservation of powers to the states. For the first time since 1930's they struck down act of congress as exceeding federal power under the commerce clause.
