General George Custer forced Sitting Bull and his people back on their reservations when they went out to hunt buffalo. At Custer's Last Stand, every American soldier was killed and it was a significant victory for Native Americans. In response, the U.S. government increased its military efforts to crush resistance.

A law that offered individual Native Americans 160 acre homesteads for farming. Its intention was to break up tribes and encourage Native Americans to assimilate into American culture. It ultimately failed because Native Americans refused to abandon their tribes or assimilate.

Wounded Knee Massacre

A Native American defeat in South Dakota. Federal authorities banned the Ghost Dance movement on reservations. Reservations police killed Sitting Bull while trying to arrest him for leading the movement. Other Ghost Dancers fled, and up to 300 Native Americas were killed. it marked the last significant resistance of Native Americans.
