What do .torrent files contain?
Definition
.torrent files contain coded text that, upon downloading, will give your torrent client instructions on how to obtain the desired program or media file.
Term
Why are public torrent trackers more unsafe than private trackers?
Definition
Because public trackers have much less of a way to hold users that create corrupted .torrent files accountable, and they could continue to do so. Also, with the number of torrents being uploaded unregulated, there are too many for both the trackers administration and its community to inspect all torrents for safety.

Clients read the .torrent file to determine where the uploader has the source file, and where the downloader wants this information to be placed. It then searches for the address of each user who has the information you wnat, and connects them to transfer that information.
Term
When two peers are connected via their torrent clients, what is this connection called?
Definition
It is called remote connection.
Term
What type of connection is a remote connection?
Definition
It is where two users connect directly to share information without the need of a central server to permanently host the data.
Term
What sets torrents apart from other means of data transfer?
Definition
What sets it apart is that it allows you to connect with many sources and download multiple pieces of information at a time, instead of connecting directly to a single source to set your file one part at a time.
Term
What is initial seeding?
Definition
Initial seeding is when each peer downloads different parts of the source file at a time, and then share that part with the rest of the group before getting the next piece.
Term
What is the benefit of initial seeding?
Definition
The benefit of initial seeding is that it maximizes the transfer rates by ensuring everyone is sharing something another user needs. It also alleviates the pressure put on the original uploader.
