Checkers Speech

Definition

Nixon was being attacked for supposedly accepting money from a private fund donated to by his political backers and using it to reimburse himself for political expenses.  The accusations were threatening his position as the VP candidate.

Nixon delivered a 30 minute address in which he attacked his opponents and addressed the accusations.  He said there was one thing he wouldn't give back and it was a dog named Checkers by his children.  This then lead to an outpouring of support from the public and eventually Eisenhower and Nixon's win.

Definition
Was the VP under Richard Nixon. He seemed to be picked at random as he had only been Governor of Maryland.  He was known to not really like the media and the antiwar movement.  He was forced to leave the VP in his fifth year due to issues stemming from accepting large amounts of bribery money while he was Governor.

Melvin Laird

Definition
Served as Secretary of Defense under Nixon.  Laird urged Nixon to maintain a policy of withdrawing US soldiers from Vietnam.  He invented the expression "Vietnamization" or the process of transferring more responsibility for combat to the S. Vietnamese Forces.

Definition
Was German born.  He served ast National Security Advisor and Secretary of State in Nixon and Gords administration.  He played a major role in foreign policy during Nixon's time as president.  He orchestrated the opening of relations between Chin, the US and Soviet Union. He encouraged the bombing of Cambodia.  He carried on secret talks between the North and made agreements for the south unknowingly to the south.

Policy pursued by US championed by Nixon and Kissinger.  It aimed to persuade the Soviet Union and Communist China to cooperate in restraining revolutions in Indochina in return for concessions in nuclear and economic areas. The policy meant to connect political and military issues.

Definition
1969 Nixon said henceforth allies would be expected to take care of their own military defense but that the US would aid in defense as requiested. It urged for the pursuit of peace through a partnership with American Allies.

Madman Theory

Definition
Publicly Nixon held to the Nixon Doctrine, but secretly he adopted the madman theory. Nixon and his administration attempted to make the leaders of other countries thing he was mad and that his behavior was irrational and volatile. He thought they would fear an unpredictable response and would avoid provoking the US. Nixon used this theory to get the North Viet to agree to a peace agreement and to end the war.

Cambodian Incursion

Definition
A series of military operation conducted in eastern Cambodia during the mid-1970's by the US and S. Viet. The invasions were a result of policy of Nixon whose decided to invade.  He hoped to wipe out the military safe have of the communist and VC. They were training communist troops in Cambodia. The US hoped to wipe these men and the infrastructure in the area out to allow more safety for S. Viet and the Americans to pull out of the war.

Norodom Sihanouk

Definition
Was the elected King of Cambodia he allowed N. Viet forces to carry out activities within his borders, including the launching of attacks and the delivery of goods and materials.  He was very eccentric also an actor.  Sihanouk was out of the country traveling when his PM Lon Nol took over. He lived in exile during Nols regime but he did support the creation of the Khmer Rouge.

Definition
Was PM under Sihanouk then took over while he was out of country.  First established a democracy then eventually gave that up for a totalitarian rule under which he began a genocide against communists.  Prior to the genocide he did crack down on the allowance of VC using Cam as a go between.
