Term
What are the lymph nodes in the neck?
Definition
SUBMENTAL
-associated w/anterior, lower chin in vicinity of anterior belly of digastric

SUBMANDIBULAR
-associated w/area around submandibular glands

CERVICAL
1) anterior--anterior to neck viscera
2) superficial--associated w/anterior/external jugular veins
3) deep--associated w/carotid sheath, including: area around larynx, trachea, and infrahyoid. Divided into 3 groups: subdigastric, midjugular, low jugular.
Term
State relationships of anterior scalene muscle.

Explain signs/sx's associated with anterior scalene syndrome (scalenus anticus syndrome)
Definition
Relations--
Anterior--subclavian vein, phrenic nerve
Posterior--subclavian arter, roots and trunks of brachial plexus

Anterior Scalene Syndrome
--hyperatrophy of anterior scalene or presence of cervical rib.
--causes: compression of structures behind muscle (subclav artery, brachial plexus)
--sx's--coldness, cyanosis, numbness, parasthesia, hand pain.
Term
What is gross structure, blood supply, and relations of thyroid gland?
Definition
GROSS STRUCTURE
Consists of:
-Isthmus
-2 lateral lobes
-pyramidal lobe (sometimes)

RELATIONS
Anterior--infrahyoid muscles
Medial/Posterior--larynx, trachea, esophagus
Lateral--carotid sheaths

BLOOD SUPPLY
Superior Thyroid A->from ext carotid
Superior Thyroid V->to int jugular
Inferior Thyroid A->from thyrocervical trunk
Inferior Thyroid V->to left brachiocephalic v
Middle Thyroid V->to int jugular
Thyroid Ima A->from brachiocephalic trunk/arch of aorta
Term
What is location, relations, function, and blood supply of parathyroid gland?
Definition
How many? usually 2 superior, 2 inferior

LOCATION
-Posterior surface of thyroid

BLOOD SUPPLY
-inferior thyroid arteries

FUNCTION
-regulate Ca2+
Term
What is relationship of esophagus in neck?
Definition
ORIGIN
-begins right under cricoid cartilage

POSTERIOR
-retropharyngeal space with danger space 3, 4. Also, vertebral column, anterior longitudinal ligament

ANTERIOR
-trachea.
Term
What is relationship of trachea in neck? What is its composition?
Definition
ORIGIN
-begins right under cricoid cartilage

COMPOSITION
-"C" shaped rings
-Tracheal muscle
-Mucous Membranes

RELATIONSHIPS
POSTERIOR
-esophagus

ANTERIOR
-isthmus of thyroid
-jugular venous arch (connecting ant jugular veins)
-inferior thyroid veins
LATERAL
-thyroid gland (lateral lobes)
Term
What is tracheostomy?
Definition
opening is made in trachea-->tube inserted for ventilation.
--performed below thyroid's isthmus-->can be done at higher levels after transecting isthmus
Term
What is cervical pleura? What is its relations? Why is it important clinically?
Definition
-lines thoracic cavity--extends above first rib.
-subject to injury from:
--low cervical injections
--trauma
--> can create: pneumothorax (air in pleural cavity) or hemothorax (bloodd in pleural cavity) or exsanguination (extensive blood loss due to hemmorhage)
