The Powhatan helped the colonists by bringing them food and teaching them to grow corn. When John Rolfe married Pocohontas, more peaceful relations formed, but in 1622, a colonist killed a Powhatan leader. The Powhatan attacked the Virginian settlers later that year and fought the nexxt 20 years.
