Oil is actually petroleum.It is found deep under earths surface and sometimes it bubbles up to the surface. People who looked for it in 1900 got lucky and found it often on the top of lakes and oceans.

Oil is a fossil fuel. Millions of years ago fish and plants died and decayed into the bottem of the sea & they were buried layers and layers under the sea. The pressure and the temperature made it oil.

How did Spindletop get its name??
Definition
If you are wondering where the name "Spindletop" came from. Well the name dates as far back as before the Civil War. One theory about the origin of Spindletop's name has to do with a grove of trees on the hill. Supposedly, because of heat waves rising from the surrounding prairie, the grove of trees had the appearance of a spinning top.
