Definition
• Part of the central nervous system.
• Approximately 45 cm (18 in.) in length.
• Extends from the foramen magnum to the first or second
lumbar vertebrae.

Definition

• Four regions (made from a total of 31 segments, correspond with spinal nerves)

• Cervical (C1-C8)

• Thoracic (T1-T12)

• Lumbar (L1-T5)

• Sacral (S1-S5)

• Each region contains tracts associated with that particular segment and those inferior to it.
