  1. Ruler- Ruled the state and decided when to go to war. Considered a god-king. Halach Uinic
  2. Nobles and Priests- Only people who knew how to read and write. Nobles oversaw the gathering of taxes and priests were mathematicians and astronomers who performed rituals and sacrifies
  3. Mechants and Artisans- Merchants travelled to different city-states and traded goods like jade and copal (tree sap). Artisans made artwork to pay tribute to the gods like murals of life and sculptures for temples
  4. Peasants- Known as the backbone of Mayan society. Worked on the land, growing all of the important crops- maize, beans and squash
  5. Slaves- Performed all kinds of manual labor for their owners. People became slaves in many different ways, born into slavery, children sold, punishment for crimes

Priests (ahkin) were mathematicians and astronomers. They also foretold the future and performed rituals and sacrifices

The Maya believed that the gods would give favors to them in return for the sacrifices

They believed that we lived in the fifth creation of the earth. They also said that they world was flat and floated on the back of a crocodile or in a lizard house

The Maya thought that heads shaped like corn were beautiful because they believed humans came from corn. So they would tie two boards to a babies' head to shape it

They thought Tikal ran out of water. There was no local source of water and only artificial reserviors that were very difficult to mantain

The enemies attacked and forced Maya out. They found artifacts from non-Maya cultures. Copans ruler, Gopher, was captured by enemies from another city. They are alo the southernmost Mayan city so they were vulnerable to attacks

They were attacked by other Native American groups. They were the northeastern most city so they were also vulnerable to attack. They could have been flooded by a river close by
