Considered to be semi-divine, which means better than a human, but not quite a god. Called tlatoni. Groups of nobles chose the next tlatoni. Decides when to go to war and when to conquer groups. Makes decisions and laws

  • Priests ran schools, studied the skies, told the future, led religious ceremonies and performed sacrifices
  • Military leaders led soldiers in battle
  • Government officials were judges, collected tribute, advised the emperor and chose the next emperor

  • Pochteca were traders, merchants and spies. They could send their kids to noble schools, live in a special section of Tenochtitlan and had their own god. All commoners paid tribute in goods, labor or servants
  • Artisans created pottery, murals and jewelery
  • Farmers, fishermen, laborers and servants

Peasants did not belong to a calpulli or neighborhood. No land to farm and no tribute. Hired out services to nobles

Definition
Slaves were prisoners of war, debtors and lawbreakers. They could become free, own land, own slaves, own goods and their children were born free. A slave is property that can be bought and sold
