How did cultural diffusion affect Japan's government?
Definition

Before: The Japanese had an emperor, who only had loose control. All of the clans, or uji, were semi - independent and had their own leaders.

After: Power was taken from the uji leaders and the emperor had all the power. He distributed the land, made people pay taxes and government officials helped him rule. Two important documents were written, the 17 Article Constitution and the Taika Reform.

How did cultural diffusion affect Japan's city design?

Before: The Japanse did not have a capital city.

After: Their capital, Nara, was based on the Chinese capital, Chang'an. The streets were laid out in a checkerboard pattern, there were Buddhist temples in the north and a boulevard ran through the center.

How did cultural diffusion affect Japan's religion?
Definition

Before: The Japanese believed in Shinto. Shinto taught love and respect for nature, the Shintoists worshipped Kami, spirits in wind and trees and believed that it was important to purify things like dirt and wounds.

After: Buddhism came to Japan in the sixth century. Mahayana was the particular branch. Mahayana Buddhists believe in Bodhisvattas. Bodhisvattas are people who can enter nirvana but choose to help others reach it instead.

Followers built shrines to Kami (Shinto) and to Buddhas / Bodhisvattas (Buddhism). Birth and wedding ceremonies were usually Shinto and funerals were usually Buddhist.

Before: The Japanese did not have a writing system, only a spoken language.

After: There are two different ways of writing in Japanese: Kanji and Kana. Kanji uses Chinese characters to represent Japanese words. Kana uses Japanese characters inspired by Chinese characters that were invented later.
