  • Abolitionists = those who wanted to abolish slavery in its entirety
  • Abolitionist movement was increasing in the northern states
  • While the south = pro slavery
  • States started to join the union as free states (federal government)
  • Union mainly consisted of the northern states whereas the confederacy was the south

Definition
He was a black slave that turned to be a very successful author and editor. He was treated in harsh conditions, but besides this he learned to read and write which was the key to his freedom and success. (refer back to Narrative of Frederick Douglas)

  • Anti-slavery members of the whig party and democratic party
  • main purpose was to oppose the expansion of slavery into the western territories
  • argued that free men on free soil comprised a morally and economically superior system to slavery
  • opposed slavery in the new territories and sometimes worked to remove laws that discriminated against freed African Americans in states such as Ohio
  • Basically slavery had to stay in the south; couldn't be expanded

Compromise of 1850
Definition
  • California wanted to join union as a free state
  • Southerners were made because that meant one more states less of the senate, abolitionist increasing
  • California as a free state, meant stronger fugitive slave laws and "popular sovereignty" for new states
  • Congress would eventually agree to this Compromise thanks mainly to the efforts of Senators Adams, John Calhoun, and Henry Clay
  • Under this compromise California would enter the Union as a free state

  • Slaves get no trial, just sent back

  • Made it easier to grow cotton, led to an economic boom in the lower southern states of South Carolina and Georgia
  • Cotton became the #1 export item of the US
