Born from God of Mars and Rhea Silvia (An Alban Vestal), came to the banks of the Tiber, and founded the city between 754-748. Both became heirs to the throne, after taking separate cities and seeing different omens, a fight occurred, where Remus was killed and Romulus became ruler (Rome Romulus). Romulus created asylums and “stole” Sabine women to help increase Rom’s population. Also created the first initial senate of 100 people. Could be fictitious, named after God Romulus, so Rome had a founder.

Romulus had them taken from their families and brought to Rome. When in Rome, given to families (Usually wealthy) to help increase Rome’s population, more people = more power.

5 of 7 kings, not of Roman descent (like the others). Was elected by getting to know all about Rome and its people, securing votes. Was in office for approx. 38 years. He conquered in Sabines, expanded the city and drained the forum. Killed by his two real children, so his adopted Son (Servius Tullius) would not take the throne.(First King thought to be real)

Servius’s mother made him the temp when L. Tarquinius was hit and killed. He slowly built up his political strength and took the throne without objection from the senate or the people. Had the Servian Reforms:
1. Military
a. Army into 193 Sentries
b. Half in each Century age 17-46 (Junior) Sent out
c. Half age 46-60, (Seniors) Protect city
2. Political
a. First Census(~80,000 free men)
b. Divides population into 5 classes determined by wealth, centuries brought own armor and voting was done by century in order.

L. Tarquinius Superbus
Definition
535-509/508

Married to the younger daughter of Servius Tullius, by a double murder. Tullia then convinces Superbus to kill her father and take the throne. While Superbus is in office, he is considered a tyrant and violent person, had a personal bodyguard and didn’t get along with the senate. He did create a lot of public works, and had a lot of expansion in Italy. Downfall due to his son’s screw up. Superbus looked to the Etruscan Lars Porsena to help fight the uprising, lose the battle. Exiled where he dies.

Definition
Superbus’ son, Raped Lucretia, who was a noble matron. He forced himself onto her and was hated for it. This pushed the public to want to fight the leadership. He caused himself and his father to be exiled.

Leads the internal overthrowing of the king. Was due to marry Lucretia, who was raped. Considered the hero of ending the monarchy
