success at driving the North Koreans back prompted him to meet with Truman at the Wake Island Conference and seek his approval to cross the 38th parallel and attack the North Koreans. This was not initially accepted because the goal was to restore the situation to as it was before the invasion. To cross the 38th Parallel could escalate the war and bring in additional enemies namely China who bordered on North Korea. MacArthur presented Truman with documentation that proved the Chinese would not involve themselves in this war if the fighting spread into North Korea.
