Southwestern Indian port where the explorer Vasco da Gama stopped at on his journey looking for spices on May 18, 1498. It became a factor in the Portuguese domination of the spice trade.

Definition
As Portugual strengthened its monopoly of the spice trade, it destroyed Arabic and Indian shipping as a consequence. In 1509,a combined fleet of Turkish and Indian ships were smashed by a Portuguese fleet. The fleet then imposed a blockade on the entrance of the Red Sea to cut of the flow of spices to the Muslim rulers of Egypt.

(c. 1462-1515) Set up a port at the Indian city of Goa, on the western coast of India. In 1511, he sailed to Malacca on the Malay Peninsula. After a bloody battle with the Muslims, the Portuguese seized the city destroyed the Arabic spice trade.

Major port in the spice trade on the Malay Peninsula that was controlled by the Muslim spice traders before falling to the Portuguese. The Portuguese only had two purposes for seizing the port: it would destroy the Arabic spice trade and it would open the door for more Portuguese expeditions to the Spice Islands and China.

Also known as the Moluccas they are an achipelago in Indonesia. The Spice Islands were where Asian spices came from during the 13th-14th century. When Portugual acquired them, the islands completed the Portuguese trading empire.
