Phi Beta Kappa
Definition
Considered the first modern fraternity, founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776. The founder was John Heath. Phi Beta Kappa created many of the characteristics of the modern fraternity: the use of Greek letters, a secret grip, a motto, a ritual of initiation, a distinctive membership badge and a constitution of fraternal laws. In 1830 Phi Beta Kappa was forced to give up its secrets including the meaning of their letters (“Philosphy, the Guide of Life”). Today Phi Beta Kappa is the highest recognized honorary fraternity for collegiate men and women of superior academic achievement.

The precursor to the modern fraternity. Young men at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia would gather together on certain evenings at the Raleigh Tavern where they would laugh and talk. The Flat Hat Club is believed to have been founded by Thomas Jefferson.

2. Gear-Up Florida – A Push America cycling event which begins in Miami and ends in Tallahassee. The trek covers 700 miles and offers interactive programming in 12 cities, raising money and awareness for persons with disabilities.

Definition
The spirit of Ultimate Respect is what separates your fraternity brothers from any other friend. It is an ideal that is intrinsically important to our brotherhood. Ultimate Respect is what allows brothers to oppose each other in a debate during chapter, yet leave without any hard feelings. Ultimate Respect is what causes you to treat a fraternity brother from another school with the same friendship you would give a man from your own.
