        | Ectoderm develops into nervous system and integumentary system

        | Term
 | Definition

        | Neural plate develops into a neural tube with a groove. This becomes the CNS (the lumen develops into the ventricular system).

Neural crest develops into the peripheral nervous system (amongst other things).

        | Caudal End of the Spinal Cord | | Definition

        | A 8 weeks, the spinal cord and vertebral column are the same length.
At birth the spinal cord ends at LV3

In adults the spinal cord ends at LV1

The vertebral column grows much faster than the spinal cord after week 8. This results in an increasingly oblique angle between the spinal root and it’s corresponding vertebrae. Therefore a crush injury at TV12 would result in a neurologic injury below the T12 level.

        | Alar plate: Dorsal region of neural tube carries sensory info (think DCML)
Basal Plate: Neurons in the ventral regio of the neural tubs carry motor information (ventral columns)

        | Begins in the 4th fetal month and is MOSTLY complete the 2-3 year of life.
"Readiness" – tracts that are involved in walking, sphincter control, etc are not yet myelinated until these skills can be learned.

        | “Growing into your disability” | | Definition

        | Disability becomes more evident when that skill emerges in typically developing children. If language hasn’t developed in peers, then a deficit in language cannot yet be observed. Child’s disability appears to get worse, however, their lesions are generally static. Their peers are similar developing typically, making the gap between them and their peers larger and larger. | |

        | Critical vs Sensitive Periods | | Definition

        | Critical period = hit or miss. If development doesn’t occur during this period it will never emerge. i.e Failure to remove cataracts with 6-8 weeks of birth, the child will have permanent visual damage.

Sensitive period = larger window. If development doesn’t occur during this period, it may be able to emerge at another time.
