Definition

The Sick-In the 19th century, people had recognised that sick people could not work. The poor law included the construction of hospitals offering free treatment


 

The Unemployed- By the end of the 19th century, the poor law had softened on the unemployed. This allowed local councils to to provide work for the unemployed.

Definition

The elderly were entitled to outdoor relief, this meant that elderly people could go to live in a workhouse, with a allowances for luxuries such as tea and tobacco.


children went into workhouses with their parents, but were treated less harshly than the adults. they were also sent to live with local familys.

Seebohm Rowntree

Definition

Booth published books using evidence from house to house enquiries, school record, census reviews and interviews with locals. Her discovered poverty started at less than £1 a week and 30% of people were below this line

Rowntree found that it was exactly the same in York and proved that the poor law didnt work.

The Suffragists formed the NUWSS (National Union for Womens Suffrage Societies) bringing all the campagins under a national name. The campaign was quite successful, in getting women's right to vote into the public eye, using peaceful, more persuasive means, such as letter writing, posters and demonstrations
