Definition
The Va Company, a joint stock company, was made successful by the cash crop tobacco, which required an extensive am't of farm land and labor. The King had many motivations for the head right system and the labor shortage in America- in part due to the tobacco crops- was one.

Definition
The head right system led to Bacon's rebellion because the system caused class disparity between the planters and their indentured servants and because the outrage over the useless Western land being doled out to ex-indentured servants was one cause of the rebellion.

Ohio Company
Definition
Bacon's Rebellion relates to the Ohio Company because high taxes imposed by VA's Governor Berkley were in the middle of both. Nat Bacon was able to use popular anger over the Governor's over-taxing the poor to start his rebellion. Similarly, Berkley paid for the militia he needed to defend the Ohio Company' stake out West by over-taxing people who would never see the benefit- the non-shareholding, middle class of VA.

Definition
The founding of the Ohio Company led to the French and Indian/ 7 years war because the company went into the Ohio River valley and took land that belonged to the French and to the Indians and claimed it for the King. The English claim for the company- taking the land for no money & without approval- sparked the world war.

Definition
The debt incurred by England as a result of the French and Indian war prompted Parliament, with Grenville's support, to pass the navigation acts in order to make more money from the trade with the colonies and start to pay back the 140 billion pound debt.

Definition
The sugar act was a navigation act that specifically targeted the price of tea sold in the colonies, placing and enforcing a 3 cent tax on molasses (3 cents down from 5).

Definition
The sugar act led to "no taxation without representation" propaganda, which led to an American boycott on English goods. This boycott hurt the British East India Company's profits, so Parliament gave the B.E.I a monopoly on tea trade in America and cut out the middle man, which enabled the company to undercut the Dutch tea American's had been smuggling without after the sugar act's molasses tax.

Definition
Concerned that the British East India Company's monopoly was hurting their business, American merchants & the Sons of liberty threw the british east india company's property- the tea- into Boston Harbor.

Definition
The Quebec acts, coercive acts, made colonies fearful that Parliament was doing away with representative assemblies. In response, the 1st Continental Congress was called, which eventually led to the follow-up 2nd continental congress in Philadelphia.

Definition
After winning the battles of Trenton and Princeton and gaining some moral momentum for the Revolution, Washington needed an alliance to close the deal. He made it his goal to work on an alliance with France. To do this, Washington knew that the Colonies would need to declare independence from England and win a major battle to convince France that there was hope for success. With the decisive win at the Battle of Saratoga, the U.S. gains France as an alliance, turning the war into a world war, and hurting Great Britain's chances of winning.

Definition
The American Revolution led to the French Revolution in two ways. One, the colonies showed the French that it was possible to be successful in rebelling from a super-power- as inspiration. Two, the French had helped the colonists win, so they were more convinced that they could rebel from their own monarchy- as a chance to get their feet wet.

Definition
The two leading political parties- the federalist and the democratic- republican, were divided. The federalists, in order to preserve their trading relationship with G.B., aligned with GB's view on the Revolution. Where as the D-R's sided with the French revolting against the controls of the King. Concerned that they would have to fight a two-front war with both France and the U.S., GB decided to sign Jay's treaty.

Definition
Jay's treaty is just one example of a long line of policies that helped the federalists and hurt the democratic-republicans. In 1800, the D-R's finally got their shot, when DR Thomas Jefferson was elected over John Adams (Fed). Jay's treaty is one of the last examples of the federalist party coming out on top. After the election of 1800, six years post-treaty- it was a steady descent into non-existence.

President Jefferson was elected over the federalist candidate in the election of 1800. The embargo act is one of Jefferson's first policies in his second term in office.
