Striated, Smooth

Term
What types of striated muscle are there?
Definition
skeletal, cardiac
Term
What is sarcolemma
Definition
Cell membrane
Term
Sarcoplasm
Definition
Cytoplasm
Term
Sarcoplasmic Reticulum
Definition
ER
Term
Myofilament

Microfilament
Term
Myoglobin
Definition
Pigment
Term
Sarcosome
Definition
Mitochondria
Term
Describe the heirarchical organization of muscle tissue
Definition
Muscle>Fasicle>Fiber>Myofibril>Myofilament
Term
True or false: Myofilaments are surrounded by connective tissue
Definition
False
Term
True or false: Myofibrils are surrounded with CT
Definition
False
Term
Name the layers of CT surrounding muscle tissue.
Definition

Endomysium- wrap fiber

Perimysium- wrap fasicle

Epimysium- wrap entire muscle

Term
_________ are connected by interconnected network of ER
Definition
Myofibrils
Term
What are the general characteristics of striated muscle cell?
Definition

Elongated cell

Multinucleated

Nucleus near periphery

Lots of mitochondria

Term
What is a triad regarding muscle ?
Definition
Consist of 2 terminal cisternae and a middle T-tubule
Term
What is a T-tubule?
Definition
An extension of the cytoplasm used to conduct nerve impulse to sarcolemma
Term
What are the terminal cisternae's role?
Definition
store and release Ca
Term
differentiate between the two types of myofilaments
Definition

Thick: myosin with heavy and light subunits (15 nm diameter)

Thin: made of troponin and tropomyosin (5nm diameter)

Term

Definition

1=Z-band

2= M

3= Z-band

4=I-band

5= A-band

6=H-zone

Term
Describe steps of sliding filament model
Definition
  1. Nerve impulse transmits to cell interior of fiber by T-tubule
  2. Ca ions release from terminal sac and enter sarcoplasm
  3. Ca binds to troponin, causing transformational change
  4. Change in troponin cause tropomyosin to move to reveal active sites
  5. ATP hydrolysis to ADP + Pi (requires Mg)
  6. Myosin bends while attached to actin
  7. ATP binds to myosin, and myosin detach from actin
Term
What is the role of Mg in sliding filament model?
Definition
Allows the hydrolysis of ATP to ADP+ PI
Term
What is the role of Ca in sliding filament model?
Definition
Binds to troponin to change it's conformation. Causes tropomyosin to reveal active site
Term
What are two skeletal muscle fiber types?
Definition
Red and White
Term
What are the differences between red and white muscle?
Definition

White: fast twitch, anaerobic, large force, few mitochondria

Red: slow twitch, aerobic, many mitochondria, lots of mito, myoglobin

Term
What makes smooth muscle different than striated?
Definition

smooth has...

  • mononicleated
  • Spindle-shaped
  • no T-tubule system
  • Each cell surrounded by thin CT
  • Random arrangement of muscle fiber
  • 3 types of filaments: thick, thin, intermediate
