What is imperialism?
Definition
Imperialism is the policy of taking over and controlling other ethnic groups that are not yours. Imperialism created rivalries between countries, which led to war.

Definition
Great Britian, France, Japan, Italy, Germany, Russia, and the United States.

Definition
An intense identification with ones ethnic group or cultural heratiage. Nationalism caused people to beleive their race was better than anothers, and to impose their customs and beleifs them.

Definition
A policy of building up the armed forces. It is a problem because now that the countries have stong armies, they are more likely to go to war.

Definition
Two or more alliances with a country. Countries created allies to prevent attacks. When countries were attacked, their allies assisted them, which pulled more countries into the war than nessicary.

Definition
The Industrial Revolution was a cause because countries wanted more resources so they could make more products. They also wantedd new markets to sell their goods.

Definition
Darwin's survival of the fittest theory was applied to humans. The europeans saw themselves as the fittest, and they wanted to aid the other countries.

He was an author who wrote Social Status. He said that Europeans were the superior race, which justified imperialism.

He was the author of White Mans Burden. This book justified imperialism by saying they were helping the other countries when they invaded. Imperialism led to the destruction of old customs, which were replaced by new, European ones.

It was a war between the Boers and the British. It is associated with imperialism because they fought over land in South Africa, where they wanted to settle and use it as an imperial power.

The Schlieffen Plan is Germany's WWI military stratagy. They wanted to fight a 2 front war against France and Russia, which concidered the army's ability to travel. Associated with militarism.

It was an native Indian fighting for Britian. Associated with imperialism becuase the Indian's helped the British conquer the land.

Definition
The sepoy rebellion was when the sepoies, who were offended by the use of pig and cow grease and how the British were treating the Indians, rebelled. Britian subdued the rebeliion and took over India. Associated with nationalism and imperialism.

It was a war caused by forigners smuggleing opium into China. When china resisted, they were defeated and the qing dynasty falls. It is associated with imperialism because the fall of the Chineese government allowed countries to create spheres of infuence.

Definition
Austria-Hungary was interested because they wanted to drive out the ottoman turks. The Ottoman turks are interested because they already have land in the Balkans and they want to keep it. Russia was interested becuase they wanted to acquire more warm water ports and ariable land. Britain was interested because they didnt want Russia to effect their trade by controlling the ports. They also were afraid that Russia would become the balance of power. The Slavs wanted the blakans completely to themselves.

Definition
The king of Etheopia's support of the Industrial Revolution helped prepare his military for a conflic with Italy. The Etheopians fought off Italy and remained independant.

Definition
Muhammad Ali was in debt due to his movement to modernize Egypt, so Britain became a presence in the African country. When Egyptians rebelled, Britain came in and ruled the country as a protectorate.

Definition
China's weak government, the Qing dynasty, caused it to be pushed around by the more modern countries. Many different countries set up spheres of influence in China after the country the Opium war and signed many unfair treaties.

Definition
The meji sponsered Japan's modernization and imperialization of China and Asia after seeing other countries take advantage of China. Japan grew very strong and was the biggest imperial power in the Eastern Asia.
