Why were the still reading Galen in 1400?
Definition

The Growing Power of the Church - The pope and his Bishops were afraid of new ideas that would challenge the power of the Church and Galen's ideas fit in with their Christian ideas.

 

War - Roman achievements such as the medical libraries were destroyed so without medical documents, progression could not be made so no one could prove Galen wrong.

How did people try to cure the Black death?
Definition

God - Pray and repent of all sins. They also punished themselves by whipping their bodies.

 

Miasma - Given sweet smelling or worse smelling bags.

Definition
It was a disease that caused buboes and boils believed to have been sent by God as a punishment for sins.

Personal opinion: Give reasons why.

 

-eg. Mostly regression as the Romans has a large understanding of public health and made some great progress in preventing illness by staying clean and using carefully designed structures to carry toilet waste away from towns. Most of these ideas including the work of Hippocrates and galen have been disregarded by medieval citizens.

Did surgery advance in the Middle Ages?
Definition
Yes, because of war many more people had to travel to other advanced places where they could learn more about health care. Also war meant that there were many more injured patients that doctors could practice upon.

What was Regimen Sanitatis?
Definition
A loose set of instructions provided be physicians to help a patient maintain good health. Ideally a physician would write one especially for their patient however in practice, this service was only used by the very rich.

Who were Apothecaries and what did they do?
Definition
They mixed herbal remedies - not concidered as skilled as Physicians. Since Apothecaries were cheaper than a Physican, most people in the middle ages saw an Apothecary. Sometimes they prescribed poison as they were not bound by the Hippocratic Oath. Many dabbled in alchemy and the supernatural. This was frowned upon by the Church.

PUBLIC HEALTH

Helped - Monastries were the only truly clean places and the monks would provide the medical care for the community.

 

Hindered - Outside of the Chruch was very unhygenic and covered in rotting pig flesh.
