Term
Was dissection allowed and why / why not. How did this help / hinder medical progress?
Definition
Religion hindered the progress of medicine as dissection was not allowed. The reason for this was to preserve the persons body for the after life. Therefore the Egyptians could not learn about the way the body worked to develop ideas about the causes, treatments etc.

Which factor did most to help the development of Egyptian medicine?
Definition

Personal opinion: Give reasons why. 1. Specialist doctors

2. Ideas about the causes

3. The River Nile

eg. The River Nile helped medical progress as when it flooded each year it covered the land with fertile soil - a perfect place to harvest good crops. These crops helped to improve the diet of the people and allowed international trade of medicines. This made Egypt very wealthy and the money could be spent on specialist doctors and medicines. The river also provided the means to create Papyrus on which details of medical cases and treatments and new terminology was recorded for future generations of doctors to learn from. Farmers also helped the development of new ideas through the channels dug to bring water from the River. suggesting that is a persons body channel got blocked they would become ill. Although not entirely correct ideas like this became important to move away from supernatural belief.....

Definition

1. Covered the land in fertile soil (provided good crops to be sold)

3. Helped to develop new ideas about the caues of diseases eg Irrigation channels (helped to move away from supernatural beliefs)

Term
Which factors helped the development of specialist doctors?
Definition
Specialist doctors developed because the Pharoah and his lords were very rich and could afford to spend money employing their own doctors - and so the doctors themselves were wealthy enough to spend their time improving their medical knowledge.
